I do not, simply recall of seeing various terms used and preferences discussed. Information processing, complex information processing, operations research, automata studies, etc. seem to be at least overlapping variations on the artificial intelligence and machine intelligence theme. General usage and technical definitions can drift. Sub-areas like machine learning et al also show up, sometimes as replacements. Earlier, broader terms from teleology to cybernetics also factor in.
I'm not sure it would be easy to capture them all beyond just a list (like Ben Franklin once did for synonyms of the term "fart" - seriously) as the definitions, differences, and taxonomy would be messy. I will keep my eyes open for this type of list and share it if I find it!
"...attendees like Simon and Newell who even decades later preferred the term complex information processing or other less showy terms."
Do you have a comprehensive list of some other preferred terms available in any of your essays, or that you can point me towards elsewhere?
